We are looking for a place to live and not having a lot of luck (why doesn't ANYONE like to rent to people with PETS??)

.....so I figured I would ask here.

This is also posted on the anchorage craigslist as well: http://anchorage.craigslist.org/hou/723051837.html

++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++

Hubby and I are moving to Fairbanks and looking to rent a place as of August with our two cats. We are coming from Florida and would like to have a place to move into when we arrive. We are both computer professionals that enjoy peace and quiet, and our kitties are quite well behaved as well.

Prefer non-furnished rental as we have belongings we are bringing with us. Prefer to be on the UAF bus line (but not absolutely necessary since we both have vehicles), and in quiet neighborhood (not in student housing).

Would like 2-3 bedrooms, with 1.5 or more bathrooms. Must have running water (no dry cabins). Seeking 9 month to 1 year lease.

Rent should be no more than $1,400 with heat included, or in the $1,000 range without heat.

Please contact me if you have or know of a rental that sounds like what we need!

It is time to start planning and getting this show on the road. If we don't figure out the who/what/when/how of it now it's not gonna happen by July!

So...here's what is happening...

I've got a tenative location recommended back in January. I'm waiting to confirm it but it is probably a pretty good bet.

I'm contacting people about a sound system since my plans for purchasing one have been delayed.

I need to know who can help make this happen as volunteers. Mainly we need people to do promotion, security, setup, cleanup, etc.

I've set up a separate tribe that will be specifically for planning notes and other shit: http://tribes.tribe.net/holosfest

If you want to help please contact me soon!

Since spring is getting closer it'll be easier for me to make a trip or few down to Anchorage to meet up with anyone from that area wanting to help out. I think that Anchorage will be an easier area to organize out of since more people live there and many of the resources I'm going to probably need (sound, etc) will come out of ANC. So...let me know if y'all would be interested in setting up a time to meet somewhere (Darwin's Theory or somewhere good you know of) and start planning!

Let's make this happen - Alaska needs a good treatment of the friendly, freaky, and counter-norm. Let's help put the dominant culture on hold for a weekend and invite others to do the same!!

We are both computer professionals, and have been watching for jobs at the university for the couple of years so we think that should not be an issue.

We will be looking for housing, and I have animals, all indoor, but some are quite heat sensitive (snakes and a lizard - my little herp haven room doubles as my office). Does anyone here have any advice about what we should look for in our first rental? I imagine we need a generator just for the herp room, in case of power failure, but am not sure what else we should look into.
Any suggestions for this cheechako?? (been reading my "Broken Toe Guide Guide to the Real Alaska"!)

I don't post in here often but some of you probably remember me posting about solstice a while back and wanting to get a regional Burning Man-esque type of event happening in Alaska. I went to the Burn this year and was disappointed with a lot of things about the event and the overwhelming inattention to self-reliance, art, and safety third. So....

I'm trying now to get a group of people together that would be interested in organizing some kind of event in Alaska, that would take place in the summer, that is geared towards those of us a bit more freakish than the mainstream - art, fire, music, all the good stuff - without a $300 ticket and without endless lines of meatheads trying to get into your girlfriend's pants. Of course everyone is invited but a crew of people is necessary to make it actually happen.

I'm not sure of a location yet - I'm still shopping for land but obviously I'd want it to be in a place that is 1) private property (to avoid law enforcement hassles and BLM-style bribing to use public lands), 2) an agreeable location, 3) preferably GU1 zoning or something of the sort that is general use and has nice large cleared areas in the interest of fire performance - we don't want to burn the goddamn state down.

The following excerpts were in the December 9th edition of the Newsminer. I think the community of Fairbanks has a great chance to do something that could possibly save, if not prolong, another persons life:

Musher diagnosed with cancer
By CHRIS TALBOTT, Staff Writer

Trail breaking dog musher Susan Butcher has been diagnosed with leukemia and is in Seattle undergoing chemotherapy treatments.
Butcher was diagnosed late last week with acute myelogenous leukemia and began treatment Tuesday at a University of Washington cancer center.
She had been sick for about three years with a blood disorder. Doctors believe she will need a bone-marrow transplant once chemotherapy treatments push her cancer into remission.
In a letter sent out on a dog mushing e-mail mailing list, Butcher said she found out about the leukemia Dec. 2 in Seattle and flew home early the next morning to pack and prepare for at least a month of treatment. She said she may have to stay there for as long as six months, with a few breaks.
Doctors are testing family members to see if there is a bone-marrow donor match. But Butcher's doctors have told her it is more likely the match will come from a stranger. She encouraged anyone interested to get themselves tested.
"I will fight this as hard as any person can," she wrote. "I love my family, and love my life with them. That will be what will keep me motivated through the hard times."
The Blood Bank of Alaska is organizing a statewide donor drive on Dec. 30 to test anyone who would like to donate a blood sample, according to a news release put out for the family. The test takes about two weeks to process and potential donors will be added to a national database that holds 5.5 million names.
Officials at Butcher's longtime sponsor, GCI, announced Thursday the company will help pay for the cost of the first 500 tests, which will be free for donors.
Monson said it is unlikely a match for Butcher will be found among donors in a pool as small as Alaska. The odds of finding a match on the National Marrow Donor Program list ranges from 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 50,000. But those who donate could be saving lives.
"The fact is they won't just be helping Susan," Monson said of potential donors. "The chance of an individual saving Susan is very small. We will find a match for Susan. And everyone who chooses to donate could be a match for someone else who needs a transplant."
Acute myelogenous leukemia is a cancer of the bone marrow and blood that keeps the body from correctly producing red blood cells and platelets. Several Web sites said between 10,000 and 12,000 people are diagnosed with AML each year.
According to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Web site, 19.8 percent of people with acute myelogenous leukemia survived between 1995 and 2001. A bone-marrow transplant increases the chances of surviving.
When asked what doctors had told the family about Butcher's chances for a recovery, Monson said: "That's a hard question for me to talk about. I don't know how to answer it."
Monson asked that friends and well-wishers not send cards or flowers to Butcher in Seattle. Her immune system is weakened by the chemotherapy, making her more susceptible to illness. She is undergoing treatment in an isolation ward.
Send cards and letters to Butcher at P.O. Box 60249, Fairbanks, AK, 99706. A new Web site, www.susanbutcher.com, should be online today. Monson said the family will update Butcher's condition on the site, which will include bone-marrow donor information.
"We've been humbled by how kind people have been," Monson said. "It's pretty overwhelming when people do stuff for you and don't expect anything in return."
Butcher and Monson are trying to find homes for the more than 60 dogs and one cat they have in their kennel. Some will be sold for top dollar, some leased for little or nothing to be raced and some given away to good homes.
Jeff King hopes to see Butcher back on the trails soon. She was often in his thoughts as he trained dogs on the Denali Highway earlier this week.
"I was heading back to my tent (Wednesday) night and the stars came out for a while," King said. " I found myself thinking of Susan for an hour or two there. I even did a classic childhood 'twinkle, twinkle little star' wish for her. I'm just devastated. It made me think back to all the things I have done with Susan and all the things Susan has done for people. She has inspired a lot of people."

Senator Gene Therriault has not declared which way he will be voting on SJR 20 (although his track record is not good). However, his is a key vote on the senate judicial committee that could kill the benefits-amendment (SJR20) without it going to a popular vote. (for background: www.legis.state.ak.us/basis/get_bill.asp This bill deals with benefits for same sex couples)

You can send him an email, or even better, a fax telling him why he should vote against this resolution.

Talking points:
1) Gays already can't get married, this amendment doesn't protect marriage, it takes away employee compensation.

2) It is very inexpensive for the state to provide the benefits the
legislation is trying to deny.

3) This amendment is crafted specifically to discriminate against a group of Alaska citizens.

4) It appears that the scope of the amendment is much larger than its intent, in other words, it's supposed to stop state employees from getting benefits, but it may also prohibit private employers from giving benefits and have other unintended consequences.

5) (if you are a PFLAG parent) Our kids need health care coverage just as much their kids.

PS If you missed testifying against this bill, you get another chance tomorrow:

"...Tuesday morning, February 21st at 8:30 a.m. and possibly again on Wednesday, February 22nd at 8:30 a.m. if not everyone has been heard. If you have not yet testified before this Committee, you are encouraged to testify next Tuesday either in person in Room 205 of the Capital in Juneau, at your local Legislative Office, or by teleconference from anywhere by calling 1-800-395-5073. Simply say that you wish to testify on SJR 20 in Senate Judiciary Committee. It wouldn't surprise me if supporters of the Resolution are encouraged over the weekend to turn out and testify next week so that there is at least an appearance of balance. It is in our best interest to continue testimony as long as possible so that this horrible Resolution can not move quickly on to the next committee of referral, which is the Senate Finance Committee."

Partisan movement hits city trails

By KORRY KEEKER JUNEAU EMPIRE

Hundreds of tiny flags of Gov. Frank Murkowski's face, glued to
toothpicks
and stuck in piles of dog excrement along Juneau's trails and parks, are
surprising hikers and trail officials.

In the last week, the 2-inch flags have been reported on Perseverance
Trail, the Flume Trail, Mendenhall Trail, Sheep Creek Trail, Fish Creek
Trail, and at Capital Park, Twin Lakes Park, Cope Park and False Outer
Point.

"We've heard about them everywhere from Douglas to the Valley," said Bob
Grochow, city parks and landscape superintendent. "We've seen it on
trails
and in the parks, and elsewhere around town. We have no idea what's
going
on."

So far, the flags appear to be confined to city and state parks and
trails.
Pete Griffin, district ranger for the U.S. Forest Service, hadn't heard
about the prank Friday.

"We have not had any complaints of that taking place on a national
forest
system trail," Griffin said. "If it happens, our law enforcement will be
on
the job."

Grochow said his maintenance crew began noticing the flags about a week
ago.

"It could be a comment on a couple of things," Grochow said. "We're just
as
concerned about the dog droppings that are left behind," he said.
"That's
really a public health issue and an employment health issue for our
staff
that are mowing, trimming and picking up litter."

Becky Hultberg, spokeswoman for Gov. Murkowski, said the Juneau flags
came
to her attention during the middle of last week.

"I have no idea who's doing it, and how long they've been doing it,"
Hultberg said.

"Clearly it's a prank, and clearly some people have extremely poor
taste,"
she said. "It's unfortunate that people choose to express their opinions
in
such a disrespectful way."

The escapade, and the design of the flags, is almost identical to a
prank
that's been going on in Germany for more than a year.

In Bayreuth, an individual or group has been sticking miniature
toothpick
flags of President George Bush into piles of dog waste, according to the
San Francisco Bay Area Independent Media Center. Almost 3,000 flags have
been found in parks across the German city.

In Juneau, the flags are showing up by the dozens, even on the steep,
1,900-foot rise in the first mile of the Sheep Creek Trail.

"It seems like everyone is talking about it," said Sue McGregor, dog
owner
and avid trail hiker.

"It must be a fairly concerted effort for them to have appeared in such
a
short time at so many different places," she said. "I'd love to know who
was doing it. Maybe I could get them to pick up the dog poop out there."

McGregor is a member of The Grateful Dogs of Juneau, a year-old advocacy
group for dog-walking rights. The group hits the trails once a month to
clean up stray piles.

"The Grateful Dogs hasn't even discussed it, but of course we're
concerned
about the dog poop," McGregor said.

"I'm sure it will come up at the next meeting," she said. "I don't know
if
somebody is trying to make a political statement, and I don't know
whether
we can do anything about it."

McGregor saw her first Murkowski flag last Thursday, just past the
parking
lot on the short trail to False Outer Point.

"Dogs poop in the first 50 yards of the trail, and that's where the
flags
were," McGregor said. "Then I saw a couple the next day on the south
side
of Fish Creek Trail. That surprised me, because I didn't think that many
people went back there."

James King, executive director of the nonprofit trail-maintenance
organization Trail Mix Inc., has also seen some of the flags. He
declined
to comment.

The penalty for sticking a small flag in a pile of dog excrement would
be
the same as littering. Juneau police charge $100 for the first offense,
$150 for the second offense in two years and $200 for the third offense
in
two years.

"I imagine we'd give them a verbal warning," Grochow said. "If we caught
them again, it would be an issue for (Juneau police)."

"(Littering) is leaving anything in the woods that shouldn't be there,"
Griffin said. "It wouldn't matter whose name was on the flag."

Are you ready to clucking rokk???? Clucking Blossom is in full-swing
blossom mode and ready to rage this Saturday May 21 from noon to night at
the Musher's Hall on Farmer's Loop Road.

Here's some down to the minute info on what to bring, what not to bring,
how to keep us creating the peace rather than dis-troying it, and what to
expect.

The two-stage schedule is at the bottom, but please know that Clucking
Blossom is much more than just a music fest of rokk-your-face-off
proportions. The musical artistic genres run the full spectrum from
classical, folk and straight-up rock to free-stylin, sugarvox
hip-hoptronica and kick-you-in-the-teeth punk. This is a serious
smorgasbord of F-banx talent. A showcase not to be missed.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!! Six main speakers will discuss pressing social
issues such as the DOYON land swap, the Galena nulcear plant site, Peak
Oil, and sustainability to get your hearts pumping and your minds bendin'.
After each speaker, there will be opportunities to participate in break out
discussions for Q & A and solutions brainstorming.

A variety of non-profit organizations and independent info sharers will
have an impressive array of demonstrations and information available at
tables to further inspire you into taking action in our beautiful world on
both local and global levels. There will also be open forum tables on
which you and your friends can display info for your cause--be it artistic,
spiritual, political or comical!!!!! B.Y.O.T. (that's table, yo) or share
someone elses, you need not sit with your info to participate in the open
forum tabling.

The open forum continues from the tables to the stage during 5 "Cluck
Offs" on the outdoor stage where you can sign up to speak about your
cause, read your poems, sing your song or dance your jig!!! Sign up for
the Cluck OFFs will be on site. Look for the rubber chicken clip board if
you want to get on the stage with your luv and rage.

An arts area will be blooming with materials for making murals, flags,
stencils, hula hoops and more. Bringing your own art supplies and ideas
to share for projects is highly encouraged and will be supported with
squeals of delight and tightly choreographed cheers from the folks at the
arts tables.

There will be organized games and activities for children including arts
and crafts, face painting and all sorts of kiddie hijynx. Bring the whole
clucking blossom family!!!

POTLUCK!!!!! Use up that salmon, caribou or moose from the freezer or
bring your own hot dogs, veggies and such for the grill. If you know you
gonna be hungry, brothas and sistas, you know you should bring some to
share wit your peeps, too. Bring some NON-disposable picnic utensils and
we'll be rockin it sustainable, yo. Bring a water bottle and stay
hydrated. Word.

Security folks will be keeping the place chokk full of love so we don't
get pummeled by the pigs or any other peace keeping, totally respectable
public servants. Spread the love and don't be hatin'. Oh yes, sorry to

Hey folks!

I am coming to Fairbanks, AK for Thanksgiving. Never been there before. My sister and her husband and kids just moved there in August, and I have an aunt that has lived in North Pole for 30+ years. I know she'll be a good tour guide, but I was wonderin' if any of you folks have recommendations about the highlights of Fairbanks, or just some tips on how an outsider....and uh.....southern girl, can survive up there in winter time? I'm really excited about visiting. I know absolutely nothing about Fairbanks, but can't wait to check it out. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

cheers,
Jennalex
