Bringing Exotic Pets to Alaska

topic posted Tue, March 11, 2008 - 11:46 AM by
If all things work out according to my plan, I am moving to Fairbanks in about 5 months, and have a houseful of animals that will be coming with me, including 7 snakes, 1 bearded dragon, 2 ferrets and 2 cats.

Does anyone know if there anything else I need to know about bringing my critters with me?? I believe I have already obtained the required documentation for traveling through Canada (vaccinations records for cats and ferrets) but I am not finding anything about what I might need for the snakes (all non venomous).

    Hi Joyce,

Hope planning is going well and that you've found the info you need. I'm really looking forward to having you up here, especially if you're going to be teaching (hint hint).

      Hi Mary,

Have not heard anything about the exotics yet, and based on everything I can find, nothing special is needed for the drive through Canada for my reptiles. Still looking though!

I will likely be offering weekly dance classes after I get settled in but want to test the waters before I just dive in and start teaching. If I do teach, I teach primarily ATS, with a bit of Gypsy Caravan and other Improv Group Dance steps that I have learned from a variety of workshops I have attended. My troupe website will remain the same and will be updated with information on classes, so be sure to keep an eye on that www.tribalwallah.net/

Also, I am actively job seeking for my day job and will be posting about my skill set and qualifications soon too. A quick preview of what type of position I am looking for - I am currently a Web Application Developer using Coldfusion, but I also am adept at Perl, with abilities in stored procedures plus HTML and JavaScript, and have done a bit of PHP and Java/JSP as well. I have taught many of these subjects at the university level as an adjunct and a Continuing Ed instructor. Would love to work for a small web development company!

I would give your local vet a call and see if you need to have a health cert to cross the boarder with your pets. I know it is needed for cats and dogs...not sure for reptiles and the like. Things could get sticky if you show up and don't have your paperwork in order...mmm, also bring your passport. Last I heard you needed that to drive up.

I needed a health certificate for my ferrets when I went through in 2000, proof of vaccinations.

Found the answer to my own questions, many thanks to SneakyParrot of Anchorage!

To cross the Canadian border from the US, here is the reference for Animal/Pet imports:
            www.inspection.gc.ca/english...se.shtml

I already planned for Health certificates and proof of rabies vaccinations for the cats and ferrets, which is needed for crossing the border.

Currently snakes and lizards are fine to transport across the border and require no certificate of health or other means of official documentation.
